Residents of a Cumbria village are hoping a scarecrow will put the brakes on speeding drivers.

The straw-stuffed figure has been stationed on a street corner in Crosby-on-Eden.

It is armed with a "speed gun" made out of a plastic bottle and villagers say from a distance it looks like a genuine police officer.

The aim is to stop people driving too fast through the village, which has an infant school and a kindergarten.

Resident David Sowden said the situation used to be "very, very bad" but the scarecrow had had a noticeable impact on drivers.

He said many motorists had reduced their speed and added: "You wouldn't believe the reaction."
