Swimmers take on lake challenge

Lake Windermere
Olympic swimmer Mark Foster will lead the challenge

A further 200 places are being made available on a mass swim challenge event across a lake in Cumbria.

The extra spaces mean 2,000 people are expected to tackle the one-mile course across Windermere during the Great North Swim event on 13 September.

The event, organised by the same team behind the Great North Run, is being launched as part of a new initiative to tackle inactivity and obesity.

Mark Foster, one of Britain's most decorated swimmers, will take part.

The event is being held to motivate people to get fit through training.

Mr Foster, an eight times world record holder, recently qualified for the Olympic Games.

He and other elite swimmers will lead the swim with people of all other abilities following behind.
