More than 100 community support officers have been deployed on the streets of Cumbria, new figures show. The Cumbria force has recruited and trained 87 police community safety officers (PCSOs) in the past 11 months, bringing the total number to 105.
Most are in Carlisle, but many are providing a "reassuring presence" in smaller towns and villages.
PCSOs issue a range of fixed penalty notices and help uniformed officers tackle anti-social behaviour.
Community barriers
Acting deputy chief constable Graham Sunderland, of Cumbria Police, said: "PCSOs are out and about every day meeting the public and engaging with young people.
"They are not only dealing with low level anti-social behaviour, but also helping to break down any barriers that exist within the community.
"They are a visible presence on the streets and people in the community feel better for seeing them.
"PCSOs allow police officers to spend more time on criminal cases and carry out their role as trained investigators.
"They are a valuable and dedicated additional resource to our local policing teams."
