Many climbers are ill prepared and cannot read maps |
A fundraising body has backed calls by mountain rescue experts for people taking on a mountain challenge to ensure they are prepared. Cumbria's Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team was called out five times from Thursday night to Sunday morning to help people attempting the Three Peaks challenge.
The team's president Bill Pattison said many of those taking part did not have basic navigation skills.
The Institute of Fundraising said it was vital that people were prepared.
Correct equipment
Institute director of policy and campaigns, Megan Pacey, said: "Whenever you undertake any activity outdoors, whether with or for a charity, it is vital you are prepared.
"Make sure the weather conditions will be suitable and that you have the correct clothing and equipment.
"If you are thinking of taking up a fundraising challenge like the Three Peaks Challenge, remember to let your chosen charity know your intentions.
"They can provide you with guidance, support and advice, ensuring that the appropriate guidelines can be followed."
The Institute has codes of fundraising practice which provide information on areas of the law and guidance and best practice.
Mr Pattison said those attempting such a challenge should have a good level of fitness and be able to read a map and compass in all weathers.
