Road claims 19th death since 2003
Cumbria Police are urging road users to obey speed limits after a motorcyclist was killed just miles from where five members of the same family died.

The unnamed rider, from Lancashire, died after coming off his machine three miles north of Plumpton on the A6.

Last month six people were killed - five from the same family - in a two-car crash on the same road.

Police said Tuesday's death was the 19th fatality on the Carlisle to Penrith road since January 2003.

Ricky Stott, 19, his sisters Kirsty, aged 17 and eight-year-old Lindsey, died in the crash on the A6 near Plumpton on 17 June.

Mr Stott's partner Sarah Wigham, 21, and their four-month old baby, Luca, also died, as did an 84-year-old motorist from Manchester.

It is dangerous or inappropriate driving, in particular at speed, that is putting road users at risk
Supt Jon Rush, Cumbria Police

Police have asked anyone who saw two motorcyclists heading north on the A6 prior to Tuesday's crash at 1120 BST, to contact them.

Supt Jon Rush said: "The A6 between Carlisle and Penrith is a priority for us and our partners and the sad loss of life of another person on the road further indicates the need for appropriate and responsible driving.

"Unfortunately, this man is the 19th person to die on this stretch of road since January 2003.

"It is dangerous or inappropriate driving, in particular at speed, that is putting road users at risk.

"Where people do not drive responsibly or obey the rules of the road, we will be taking firm action.

"Drivers can expect to see increased activity from police and cameras on this section of the A6 for the foreseeable future.

"However, the priority is for all road users to drive appropriately and according to the speed limits on this road, as they should on all roads in this county.

"I know that if they did, these ongoing tragedies would not occur."
