World Cup parties stretch force
Police in Cumbria dealt with almost 900 calls on the same day as England made their debut in the World Cup.

More than 100 people were arrested during 10 June, although the force said there were few serious incidents.

A spokesman said a combination of hot weather and the popular Appleby Horse Fair resulted in the "unprecedented number" of calls.

The spokesman said the 876 calls meant it was one of the busiest ever days in the force's history.

'Responded magnificently'

He said: "There were few serious incidents, no more than in a normal weekend; the large number of arrests were all for minor offences.

"Over the weekend there were no breaches of the football banning orders. All those involved reported as required."

Acting deputy chief constable Graham Sunderland added: "The officers of this constabulary responded magnificently to what has been a busy weekend.

"Fortunately the number of serious incidents were few, but officers who are dealing with rowdy parties or arguments between friends and family caused by drink cannot be dealing with emergency calls.

"This can tie officers up unnecessarily. I would ask people to behave more responsibly during future matches."
