A man has been killed and a teenager injured in a crash involving two horse-drawn carriages and a car. David Ward, 40, from the Coxhoe area of Durham died in the incident on the A66, near North Stainmore, Cumbria on Wednesday morning.
It is believed he was travelling to the Appleby Horse Fair with his 15-year-old son, who received minor injuries, and a friend, who was unhurt.
Police have arrested the motorist, a 30-year-old Sunderland man.
Drivers are being urged to take care on the A66 during the fair which begins on Thursday and attracts horse dealers and travellers from around the country.
Warning signs have been put up advising motorists there are likely to be horse drawn carriages on the road.
In June 2003 a tanker driver crashed into a horse-drawn caravan on the A66 near Appleby, killing Stuart Nicholson, 44, and his son Connor, six, from County Durham.
Gerald Grange, 51, from Stockton, was jailed for four years for dangerous driving, later reduced to three-and-a-half years on appeal.
