Jobs to be cut at biscuit factory
McVitie's Carlisle
The company says it is committed to the Carlisle factory
Biscuit maker McVitie's said up to 33 jobs in Carlisle will go after the factory was badly damaged by floods.

The factory was extensively damaged by the January floods and there had been doubts about its future.

Parent company United Biscuits said it was committed to the site but some lines could not be repaired meaning some production will have to be moved.

The company has started a 30-day consultation period with unions about the proposals.

Early stage

A United Biscuits spokeswoman said the factory was now back up to 80% of pre-flood production levels. It has a workforce of 1,000.

She said: "There has been a lot of hard work to get it up and running again. The bulk of it is back.

"We are committed to keeping the factory in Carlisle.

"Because of the damage some of the lines aren't repairable. The majority of production will remain but there are a couple of line that won't be replaced."

She said the consultation was at an early stage and it was hoped the final number of job losses would be lower.
