Security measures at Sellafield are to be increased

The British Nuclear Group hopes to install new security systems including an automatic vehicle number plate recognition system.

Managers said restricting vehicle access to the Cumbria plant and encouraging staff to share cars may also become a permanent measure.

The extra security measures will be phased in over the next few months.

Sellafield official Tony Price said: "We are looking at proposals to monitor people coming on and off the site but the details need to be firmed up."

Restrict access

The day after the 7 July attacks non-essential workers at the plant were told to stay at home as security was reviewed.

The decision to increase the level of alert at all nuclear sites across the UK was made by the government's Office of Civil Nuclear Safety.

Sellafield bosses say they have acted to restrict access and limit the number of personnel and vehicles on the site.

Paul Watson, who works in programme management, said: "I've started car sharing with my brother and it has saved me a lot of money on petrol - it is just one of those necessary evils."
