Businesses encouraged to team up
Sellafield
Sellafield will be decommissioned over the next 10 years
Businesses in West Cumbria are being urged to work together if they do not want to miss out on securing work during the clean-up of Sellafield.

It is estimated that decommissioning the UK's nuclear power stations will cost about 56bn, of which 60% will be spent in West Cumbria.

More than 80 businesses had meetings with suppliers wanting to find out about local skills and services.

The British Nuclear Group told firms to team up to be competitive.

British Nuclear Group commercial director Steve Morgan said: "Currently there are 1,500 contractors on site at Sellafield.

Work smarter

"It's not practical for British Nuclear Group to be dealing with so many small contractors.

"If businesses team up, they can keep a joint look out for opportunities, share costs and offer a wider range of services."

The event was organised by West Cumbria Development Agency (WCDA) and West Lakes Renaissance.

WCDA chief executive Dog Holden said: "If we want to strengthen our economy businesses need to be aware of changes and, if necessary, grasp the nettle and learn how to work smarter and more competitively."
