Rural readers given library link
Library books
Thousands of books are listed on the database
A rural community in Cumbria is embracing new technology to order library books from their corner shop.

Villagers in Halbankgate, near Brampton, are clicking on to a special system which links to a county-wide database of available literature.

The Library Link scheme is funded by Cumbria County Council, which has described it as a vital service for rural communities.

Computers show a list of books which is updated weekly.

The computers provide a direct link to the library service and its full catalogue.

Greater access

Villagers can borrow books in the shop, order books from the main catalogue and renew existing loans.

County councillor Roger Bingham, cabinet portfolio holder for culture and communities, said: "Library links are an important part of Cumbria County Council's continuing efforts to improve library services in rural areas and support existing local services.

"It means library services are available during the opening hours of each host venue, allowing users to have much greater access to services than we have traditionally been able to provide.

"The scheme is extending across the county."
