Truants given crackdown warning
police patrol
Shopping centres will be among the areas targeted
Pupils who skip school without permission are being warned they face a crackdown over the next few weeks.

Cumbria County Council is working with Cumbria Police to carry out truancy sweeps around the area.

Education welfare staff and police officers will stop young people thought to be of compulsory school age and ask them why they are not in class.

Shopping centres are among the areas to be targeted after concerns pupils are being taken Christmas shopping.

'Legal duty'

Council attendance and exclusion manager Barry Archibald said: "Previous sweeps have clearly shown that far too many pupils are taking time off school without good reason and in most cases it is with their parents' knowledge and consent.

"At this time of year we find that parents take their child Christmas shopping so we will be targeting shopping centres in particularly.

"Parents must understand that they have a legal duty to ensure their child attends school regularly."
