State of county's health revealed
An NHS survey has revealed a poor state of health among people in Cumbria.

More than half of people in the county are overweight, one in five is a smoker and more than a quarter of men drink too much.

The survey was produced by the NHS in North and West Cumbria, which asked 25,000 adults about their dietary and physical habits.

It shows that 80% of people in Cumbria do not eat a recommended five portions of fruit and vegetables each day.

The survey was carried out in North Cumbria last autumn.

It shows that 54% of people in the county are officially overweight and that 60% do not do the amount of exercise recommended by health professionals - 30 minutes five times a week.

The figures also show 27% of men and 17% of woman drink more than the recommended maximum of 21 units per week for men and 14 for women.

The figures were revealed just one week after health specialists met in Cumbria to discuss the threat obesity, smoking and alcohol pose to people in the region.
