Cameras will reduce winter chaos
Thousands of pounds is to be spent on monitoring winter road conditions in Cumbria with special cameras.

The CCTV-style cameras will be placed at known blackspot areas on the A66 and M6.

The move, by the Highways Agency, is aimed at preventing a repeat of last year, in which severe cold snaps caught out council gritters.

The cameras will be sited at Shap on the M6, and Troutbeck and Stainmore on the A66.

Both routes have suffered in the past from extreme weather conditions.

Highways Agency spokesman Bob Baldwin, said: "In severe conditions it does become almost an impossible task.

"But using these CCTV cameras, we will have real time information.

"We will be able to tap into these locations, see what the conditions are like on these exposed locations and that we are using the right equipment to keep the roads open."
