Plans for the site have gone on display

The 1,200 acre site known locally as 'the Dump' has been renamed Derwent Forest in a bid to attract potential investors.

An open day is being held at Great Broughton School, with minibus trips around the former Royal Naval Armaments Depot on offer.

Designs for the forest park visitors centre will be displayed and talks on the proposals for the site development will be given during the day.

People who used to work on the site will also share their memories about life working there.

Theme park

The Royal Naval Armaments Depot is one of the largest brownfield sites in north-west England and is expected to be acquired by Allerdale Council for development early next year.

Officials hope to create a regional forest park, offering a variety of walking, cycling and riding routes for the public, along with facilities to reflect the history of the site.

One proposal put forward by a consortium of local businesspeople is to include a plan to build an "elemental" theme park, called Utropia, on the site.

It is hoped the theme park - which would feature white-knuckle rides based on the elemental themes of air, earth, fire and water - would create hundreds of new jobs.
