Tesco looks for new county store

Discussions are taking place which could lead to another Tesco store setting up in Cumbria.

Allerdale councillors are being advised to talk to the company about land at Laundry Fields in Workington.

The Allerdale Local Plan, drawn up in 1999, states that land at Laundry Field is allocated for retail use for development in the period beyond 2001.

Potential developers were asked to produce bids - and the council says Tesco was the most suitable.

Some of the money from the sale of the land would be used to help pay for new and improved leisure facilities.

The rest would be spent on housing and the environment.

Tesco corporate affairs manager Shaun Edgeley said the company looks forward to playing a part in the regeneration of Workington.
