Wind farms will generate power for tens of thousands of homes |
Proposals for a major wind farm off the Cumbrian coast are being drawn up by three companies. Centrica, which owns British Gas, and two Scandinavian firms are interested in the 30 turbines near Walney Island, which would power 87,000 homes.
Kevin Cochrane, from British Gas, said he believed renewable energy would become an increasingly important industry in Cumbria.
"I think offshore is an emerging new industry for the UK and I think it is very exciting for Cumbria.
"[Cumbria] is one of three main areas the government has highlighted."
Mr Cochrane said collaboration between the enterprise boards, the companies and other groups was vital to maximise job creation.
"Manufacturing, fabrication, project management and offshore support are all opportunities for this area," he said.
