Rescue teams are highly trained

Cumbria's mountain rescuers say the number of incidents they deal with is back to the levels they were at before foot-and-mouth hit the county in early 2001.

In 2002 there were 337 incidents on the fells, only slightly down on the year before when the disease closed the fells to walkers.

The rescue teams are becoming better equipped, and walkers tend to carry mobile phones for emergencies.

A spokesman for the Lake District Search and Mountain Rescue Association (LDSMRA) said there had been lots of changes to their role over the years.

The LDSMRA is the umbrella body for the 13 mountain rescue teams in Cumbria.
