It is hoped the signs will ease congestion |
New car parking signs aimed at easing congestion in Carlisle city centre have being unveiled.
Thirteen electronic signs have been put up on the main approaches to the city to let motorists know which car parks have spaces available.
The scheme has cost 250,000, and will direct drivers to the nearest car park and say how many spaces are free.
A sensor at each car park counts the number of cars entering and leaving and automatically sends the information to a main control system, which updates the information on the signs.
'Pleasant experience'
The signs are aimed at directing motorists to available spaces to stop them driving around the city looking for a parking space, easing congestion problems in the city.
Councillor Kevan Wilkinson, county council spokesman on transport and highways, said: "This scheme will direct traffic to where there are available off-street parking spaces in the most efficient manner possible and will help reduce congestion in the city centre."
Councillor John Collier said: "The variable message signs will allow motorists to find a parking space more quickly.
"It will help make a visit to Carlisle, whether for leisure, shopping or business, for locals or visitors, a more pleasant experience."
