Coventry University has confirmed it plans to axe up to 37 staff. The university said the cuts were as a result of cost-cutting, or external funding coming to an end. The University and College Union (UCU)has opposed the measure and said it feared there were plans for further compulsory redundancies. But the university has denied this and said it was consulting with unions. It said it aimed to redeploy as many staff as possible. A spokesman said: "As far as the university is concerned, these changes are just part of normal business; indeed the university continues to be successful and will be declaring a surplus this year. "It will also continue to create new posts or fill vacant ones where appropriate. "It is entirely untrue to suggest that there is any university-wide plan for redundancies."
