A speed camera that was previously cut down with an angle grinder has now been destroyed in an arson attack. A burning tyre was placed over the device on the A5 near Nuneaton, Warks, close to the junction with the A444, at about 0230 BST on Wednesday.
The camera is thought to have been destroyed, causing damage estimated at about 38,000.
Stephen Rumble, from the Warwickshire Casualty Reduction Partnership, said the group was "very disappointed".
Criminal damage
"That particular location has seen a number of unpleasant crashes in recent years and cameras have proved very successful in reducing collisions," he added.
Warwickshire Police are trying to establish whether the unknown arsonist targeted the device because he had a grudge against speed cameras or to prevent being fined for speeding.
In the case in March 2003, demolition worker Martin James O'Callaghan was snapped travelling 13mph above the 60mph limit.
He then returned to the scene four hours later and cut down the machine with an angle grinder to avoid a 60 fine.
Magistrates in Nuneaton ordered the then 27-year-old, from Donnington Road, Horbling, Lincs, to pay 4,000 in compensation and perform 120 hours of community service after he admitted criminal damage.
