Traders' fears over Arena complex
Former Sky Blues boss John Sillett (left) drives in a stake at what will be the centre point of the new pitch
Work began at the site in January
Traders have raised fears over a 113m stadium development which they say is threatening their livelihood.

It is estimated as many as 3,000 jobs will be created when the Arena complex opens in Foleshill, Coventry.

The development will be the new home of Coventry City FC and will also contain several stores, including the largest Tesco supermarket in England.

Shopkeepers close to the site are meeting on Wednesday to discuss ways of safeguarding their businesses.

Many traders in Foleshill, Longford, Holbrooks and Bedworth fear they will lose customers as a result of the new complex.

'Balance' needed

Chairman of the Foleshill Business Association Alan Taylor said he hoped the city council, which stumped up 21m to keep the project alive, would not forget about smaller businesses.

"We wonder whether or not they have actually thought through everything," he said.

"Yes, there will be a lot of jobs created - unfortunately many of them low-paid.

"But we have to balance that with the jobs that are going to be lost."

The complex is scheduled to be ready for the Sky Blues to move into in August 2005.
