Residents back alcohol-free zone
Can being confiscated
People could be fined up to 500 for drinking on the streets
People living in a part of Coventry troubled by anti-social behaviour have backed plans to ban the consumption of alcohol in public places.

The city council is considering making Hillfields an alcohol-free zone in an effort to deal with the problem.

It has completed a survey of people living in the area, with 98% of residents coming out in favour of outlawing drinking in public areas.

Councillors are meeting on Tuesday to decide their next move.

Four parts of Hillfields have been identified as particular problem areas - Primrose Hill Park, the Swanswell, the Village Square and the Canal Basin.

If the council approves the plans, West Midlands Police will be granted extra powers to confiscate alcohol being drunk in designated areas.

Those caught drinking in public would also face being fined.
