The airport hopes to start offering flights to 11 European destinations |
Managers at Birmingham International Airport are trying to block plans to expand Coventry Airport, claiming there is not enough airspace for them both to operate simultaneously. They have lodged an objection with Warwick District Council, which is considering an application for a new passenger terminal in Coventry.
Coventry Airport hopes to start offering cheap flights to 11 European destinations from March.
Many local residents have objected to the proposals, claiming they will cause traffic problems, noise and pollution.
Job hopes
Birmingham International's managing director Richard Heard says there are airspace capacity issues that need to be resolved before any expansion at Coventry is approved.
The Government's white paper on aviation, which was published last year, called for a Civil Aviation Authority review on airspace in the Midlands.
Mr Heard is calling for this review to take place before planning permission is granted for a new terminal.
Holiday company Thomson announced in December the introduction of a new low-fares airline, Thomsonfly.com, based at Coventry Airport.
The firm said more than 200 jobs would be created at Coventry Airport in the first year, with the surrounding regions also expected to benefit as increased numbers of passengers boost local businesses.
The airport is currently used almost exclusively for transporting cargo.
