A police dog who helped to catch two burglars and recover a hoard of stolen goods has received an award.

It is the second year running that Sam has received the Police Dog Action of the Year Award, along with his handler Pc Ian Head.

The German Shepherd dog, who completed his training with Warwickshire Police in 2001, is believed to be the first dog to receive the award two years in a row.

Pc Head said Sam was a credit to the Warwickshire Police.

"In his time with us, he has intercepted numerous offenders resulting in a huge amount of property being recovered.

"Sam's skills are also invaluable when searching for missing children or adults who may be vulnerable because of their age or an illness.

"Sam has been involved in many high profile operations.

"He was at the Ryder Cup last year and has also supported high profile visits from the Queen and other members of the Royal Family."
