All flights at Newquay Airport have been grounded

All flights at Newquay Airport have been cancelled amid concern that ash from a volcanic eruption in Iceland could damage aircraft engines.

Airspace restrictions have been imposed across the whole of the UK, following advice from the Met Office.

The air traffic control service (Nats) has banned all flights in controlled UK airspace, apart from emergencies, until at least 1900 BST.

The ash cloud was expected to move through northern Scotland by 1300 BST.

A Nats spokesperson said: "There will be no flights permitted into UK controlled airspace except in emergency situations.

"This has been applied in accordance with international civil aviation policy.

"We continue to monitor the situation with the Met Office and work closely [with] the airline customers and adjoining countries."
