Resort braced to lose surf event

Swimming pool
Funding dried up for a pool at Fistral beach

Newquay is expecting to hear that it has lost its chance to host the Surf Life Saving World Championships.

A decision is expected on Monday by the International Lifesaving Federation, which is gathering in Germany.

Newquay organiser Surf Life Saving GB received a setback last year when it failed to find 750,000 to build a 50m (164ft) swimming pool at Fistral beach.

It is now feared the 2010 event, which attracts thousands of competitors, will be moved out of Cornwall.

The first Surf Life Saving World Championships were held in 1994 at Newquay and Cardiff, and they are now held biannually.

In that time, the event has grown in size from about 1,000 to about 4,000 athletes.
