Dates revealed for digital switch

Television transmitter
Broadcasting in digital format is a more efficient way of transmitting

Television viewers in Devon and Cornwall have about a year to ensure they are ready for the switch over from an analogue signal to digital.

Digital UK has confirmed the dates analogue television transmitters will be switched off in the South West.

The Huntshaw Cross transmitter, serving north Devon, is set to go digital on 1 July 2009.

Redruth transmitter, serving west Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly will start the switchover on 8 July 2009.

Finally the Caradon Hill transmitter, which serves Plymouth, parts of Devon and east Cornwall will start changing on 12 August.

Increased take-up

Viewers will need to have a new digital TV receiver in place, or some other means of receiving a digital signal, like a satellite box or cable.

Digital UK said it was necessary to switch off the existing analogue broadcasting system to create the capacity to extend Freeview services to the whole of the UK.

It said broadcasting in digital format was also a more efficient way to transmit television signals and would free up airwaves for new services such as wireless broadband and mobile television.

Ofcom recently reported the take-up had increased significantly in Plymouth - with 92% of homes having converted to digital.
