South west sailors abandon race
Fujifilm in Transat Jacques Vabre 2007
The South West yacht Fujifilm has been forced to abandon competing in the Jacques Vabre yacht race due to an alternator failure.

Devon's Alex Bennett and Ifor Pedley from Cornwall said that the problem meant none of the boat's electronics systems would work.

The Devon sailor said: "If our charging system goes out of the window, we're unable to stay on the race track."

The pair are sailing in to Lanzarote and expect to be there by midnight.

The race sees boats and their crew travel 4,000 mile (6,437km) from France to South America.

Both men started from Le Harve on 3 November in the Open 40 class.

Alex Bennet said the team relied heavily on the electrical equipment which includes radar, flat screen monitors and navigational lights.

"They are all powered by a bank of electrical batteries and those batteries have to be monitored by a charging source, " he said.
