Officers wear force issue polo tops
Police in two Cornish towns are taking a relaxed approach to uniform this summer by pounding the beat in shorts, polo tops and flip-flops.

Officers in St Ives and Hayle will dress down as they patrol beaches, car parks and other holiday sites on certain days.

It is part of a scheme to raise crime prevention awareness among visitors.

Sgt Simon Dobson said that wearing less formal uniform would engage the public in "a relaxed way".

Sgt Dobson said: "This is a low crime area and we want people to help us keep it low.

'Special image'

"We clearly do not want to increase the fear of crime but we need to get across important crime prevention messages that can sometimes be forgotten.

"We have been running this scheme over the past couple of years and the reaction is generally very positive and it adds to the special image of the area."

The officers wear force issue polo shirts, and their own shorts and flip-flops, although their official badges are clearly displayed.

Sgt Dobson added that officers would be keeping their full uniform and personal equipment close by in case of any serious incidents.
