The redevelopment could bring the Ryder Cup to Cornwall |
Golf's Ryder Cup could head to Cornwall after a planning decision by Caradon District Council. Permission was given to the owners of St Mellion Golf and Country Club near Saltash to replace the club's hotel, and build 265 golf homes.
The new 100m development should guarantee the English Open being played on St Mellion's Nicklaus course for five years from 2008.
Owners Crown Golf said the whole area would prosper from the development.
Parish councils and some residents had objected to the plans, claiming it would exacerbate traffic problems and blight the landscape.
Andrew Baylis told BBC News he was disappointed, but the battle was not over.
"There's a number of things the council and officers could seek to impose as part of the final planning permission to improve the scheme and reduce its impact and I shall certainly be hoping to influence those decisions."
