Plug pulled on anti-sewage ball
SAS ball crowd
About 4,000 people attended the ball last year
Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) has cancelled its annual ball amid fears that it would lose money.

The ball has grown to be one of the main social events of the year in Cornwall with bands such as Faithless, The Darkness and Razorlight appearing.

Last year 4,000 people attended - but it only just broke even.

Richard Hardy of SAS said that "spiralling costs" meant the financial risk was too great for a small not-for-profit campaigning group.

'Legendary event'

He said: "Following a disappointing return in 2005, we barely managed to break even on the 2006 event.

"It has been hugely disappointing for everyone concerned, especially as the core reason for holding the event has always been to generate funds towards our campaign for clean and safe recreational water."

He said future events would have to raise money for the SAS.

"We can never allow ourselves to reach a position where our campaigning work may suffer as a result of us having to subsidise an event such as the ball."

He thanked everyone who had made the ball "such a legendary event".
