The RSPCA says there is never an excuse for abandoning an animal

The RSPCA is trying to track down the owner after workmen discovered the male creature between Colliford and St Neot.

The iguana was taken to a vet and said to be in a reasonable condition, although it was a little bit thin and had not shed his skin properly.

An RSPCA spokeswoman said the iguana was lucky to be alive and would not have lasted long on the moor as they required a temperature of at least 26C.

Animal Collection Officer Felicity Cross said many people took on exotic pets without thoroughly researching their needs.

She said: "It is a sad fact that exotic pets are frequently abandoned after their owners lose interest in them or decide they are too big or difficult for them to keep.

"There is never any excuse for abandoning an animal and if people have pets which they can no longer care for, then help and advice is available from a number of organisations including the RSPCA."
