The Eden Project's bid to build a new water and energy biome has progressed after being short-listed for national lottery funding. It is one of six projects to reach the second round of a contest for the Big Lottery Fund's Living Landmark Award.
It could win up to �50m in funding as part of the award, which will culminate in a televised public vote in 2007.
The Edge biome would focus on the challenges of water and energy use in global climate change.
A Big Lottery Fund programme committee will recommend which projects should go through to the public vote in September 2007.
The Eden Project has contributed �700m to the Cornish economy since opening five years ago.
Director of the Eden Project, Tim Smit, said the centre needed to become a "global must-see".
"The Edge will explore what it is to live with the grain of nature. It is a project for our time and is arguably the most challenging and essential call to arms for our generation," he said.
