Cameras, fencing and microchipping form part of the security at the zoo

Newquay Zoo, which has a number of rare and endangered tortoise, said it wanted to improve its security.

A woman is due to appear in court later this month in Devon, charged with handling a tortoise which was stolen from Paignton Zoo last year.

Newquay Zoo is confident the new measures will mean there is little danger of its animals being taken.

Zookeeper John Meek said: "We've got quite a wide range of security measures here and we're continually updating and changing them, so we feel, hopefully, secure.

"Also, the animals themselves are all microchipped and easily identifiable."
