An airline has confirmed that its trial service between Cornwall and Spain will be withdrawn from the end of April. The airline Monarch Scheduled started its route from Newquay Airport to Malaga last November, flying three times a week.
The company said the trial is over and the route is unsustainable because of the �5 departure tax introduced by Cornwall County Council last year.
The council introduced the tax to help reduce a deficit of about �1m a year.
Airport improvements
Monarch Scheduled said the charge made flying to Cornwall more expensive than other regional airports and reduced demand from overseas visitors.
In August, Ryanair announced it would cut its flights because of the departure fee.
Cornwall County Council said the levy is also to help finance much-needed improvements at the airport.
It added that all its surveys showed that many departing passengers said they were prepared to pay the fee to secure the airport's future.
