The current Atlantic 75 will work alongside the new D class boat |
A ceremony to officially name and dedicate a new lifeboat in Cornwall is being held by the RNLI on Sunday. The new D class inshore lifeboat for Newquay is of the latest design and has a top speed of 25 knots.
The Valerie Wilson is named after the wife of Lesley Wilson from the Masonic Lodge of Harmony in Twickenham which donated funds for the vessel.
The new vessel is faster than its predecessor and carries more sophisticated navigational equipment.
The RNLI said the D class boat was ideal for rescues close to shore where larger lifeboats cannot operate and could be righted manually by the crew after a capsize.
Valerie Wilson will operate alongside the station's Atlantic 75 Phyllis.
