The county produces 440,000 tonnes of waste each year |
Test drilling has been carried out by a council at a site to establish whether it is suitable for a multi million pound waste incinerator. But Cornwall County Council said although it was investigating a number of sites, no decision will be made about the waste strategy until January.
The drilling has taken place in a field near St Dennis in clay country.
Residents claim the council should be looking at other waste options and more recycling should be encouraged.
Hundreds of people are expected at a meeting in St Denis on Wednesday to discuss ways to oppose incineration.
The county produces 440,000 tonnes of waste each year and landfill space is running out.
Earlier this month Cornish food producers spoke out against a new incinerator, claiming it could adversely affect tourism and the local economy.
