Wedding to boost Duchy interest
Charles and Camilla
Prince Charles is one of the biggest landowners in the South West
Tourism bosses in the South West say the impending royal wedding will bring a welcome boost to the region.

Prince Charles, the Duke of Cornwall, announced last week that he and Camilla Parker Bowles are to marry on 8 April in a civil ceremony at Windsor Castle.

Mrs Parker Bowles will take the title HRH the Duchess of Cornwall.

Tourism chiefs said they believed pictures of the region would be broadcast around the world and bring more visitors to the Duchy of Cornwall.

Duchy estates

As Duke of Cornwall, the prince is one of the biggest landowners in the South West.

As part of its estates, the Duchy of Cornwall owns 18,000 acres in Cornwall, 70,000 in Devon, 15,000 in Somerset, 3,000 in Dorset, and almost all of the Isles of Scilly.

About 13m people visit Devon and Cornwall every year and the tourist industry employs 60,000 people directly.

But compared to other parts of the UK, there are relatively few foreign visitors and it is their business South West Tourism wants to attract as images of the region are broadcast to a global audience.

Malcolm Bell, of South West Tourism, said: "What we're hoping is that there will be lots of foreign news crews in the UK in the run-up to, and at the wedding, and that many will look at the angle of 'what is the Duchy of Cornwall?'.

"If we can get lots of international coverage about how wonderful the Isles of Scilly are, how wonderful Cornwall is, and Dartmoor, and Dorchester, and other Duchy lands; that is going to be great profile-raising for the South West."
