Ferry hit by breakdown repaired
A ferry carrying 105 people has been repaired after breaking down and drifting 14 miles off Land's End.

The vessel Diplomat, owned by Celtic Link, was en route to Cherbourg from Rosslare on Sunday morning when it developed engine problems.

Coastguards had been concerned that the ship, with 72 passengers and 33 crew on board, was drifting near to Wolf Rock.

Engineers later re-started the engines and the ship was sailing to Falmouth under escort from a commercial tug.

Bumpy weather

Coastguards in Falmouth were contacted at about 0600 GMT by the 550ft (167m) Bermuda-registered vessel informing them of its problems.

They said they had concerns about the ferry passing close to Wolf Rock, and also that the weather was "a little bumpy on scene" with winds up to Force 8 from the north west in the area.

They launched the Sennon lifeboat, the Anglian Princess tug, and another commercial tug with the idea of towing the ferry into Falmouth for repairs.

Engineers on board spent the morning trying to re-start the engines and the boat eventually started sailing again under her own steam.

She is being escorted by the commercial tug. The lifeboat and Anglian Princess have returned to port.

Further repairs will be made at Falmouth before the crew and passengers continue their journey to Cherbourg.
