Pc Mooney takes up his post on 12 September

Devon and Cornwall Police believe the new role is the first of its kind in the country.

Pc Rob Mooney will be based at Launceston Police Station.

Police say the move has been prompted by concerns over the welfare of the growing numbers of overseas workers settling in the area.

'Break down barriers'

Concerns over possible exploitation and lack of knowledge of UK law have also contributed to the decision.

Pc Mooney said the Cornish agricultural community had traditionally relied on migrant workers to help with harvests and flower picking and most enter the UK legally.

But he added there had been allegations in the past that the work and accommodation for some workers has been "unacceptable" and that they have been exploited by gangmasters.

He said: "Language and other barriers have proved to be obstacles for agencies investigating these complaints.

"My aim will be to work with migrant workers and people who have contact with them in order to break down some of these barriers for the benefit of the whole community."
