New cancer screening for patients
Smear test cell
The LBC screening should start in January 2006
Patients in Devon and Cornwall are to benefit from a new screening method for cervical cancer.

The region is getting the new system which is hoped will save many lives ahead of most other parts of Britain.

The liquid based cytology (LBC) method can reduce the rate of inadequate smears from 9% to between 1% and 2%.

The National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) says the new method should be adopted by British hospitals from 2008.

The South West is one of only a few areas to get the system early.

The Royal Cornwall Hospital at Treliske in Truro and Derriford Hospital in Plymouth will get the new screening by January 2006.
