Move to reduce inmates held in UK
The number of Jersey prisoners held outside the island should be reduced to cut costs, according to politicians.

States members are being asked to approve a two-storey block to hold 40 prisoners and a new kitchen.

The finance committee is supporting plans for the new wing at La Moye, but wants the new cells used to cut the number of inmates being held in the UK.

The wing should be finished by summer 2006, but the population is expected to have increased to fill the new block.

The finance committee has told the States although it supports the proposals and tenders placed for the work, if the new block is filled immediately then costs will be considerable.
