Joint plan to ease dental crisis

One in three dentists are expected to retire within 10 years
A dental school could be set up in the South West to try to ease the shortage of dentists.

Local authorities in the region are working together to try to solve the crisis in the service.

Less than half the population in Devon and Cornwall is currently registered with an NHS dentist.

A joint report by the councils, being discussed on Thursday suggests that with no dental school, many new dentists are not moving to the area.

It also reveals that one in three dentists in the region will retire within the next 10 years, leaving a further shortage.

The report recommends training facilities should be set up at the Peninsula Medical School.

The government is also being urged to review it funding for dentistry.
