Oyster licences set to increase
Oyster fishing
More money is needed to manage the Cornish oyster beds
Oyster fishing in Cornwall could become more expensive.

The Port of Truro oyster fishery has been worked since Roman times and is considered to be the largest natural free fishery in the world.

Only 30 boats, powered either by sail or by hand, are allowed to fish the oyster beds which are becoming increasingly expensive to manage.

Carrick District Council is debating increasing oyster licences from 130 to 200 from October.

The Port of Truro Oyster fishery is said to be in good health but councillors have been told the costs of managing the oyster beds will probably be 5,000 more than the income generated this year.
