A new plan aimed at encouraging young people to pursue a career in farming in Cornwall has been unveiled.

The report into the future of the County Farms Service makes a number of recommendations.

The study was produced following almost 12 months of research with time spent visiting farms in Devon and Cornwall and meeting existing tenants.

The panel heard evidence from more than 20 witnesses, including the National Farmers' Union and Young Farmers Clubs.

Realistic plan

The final report by the Farms Service Strategy review panel aims to provide a framework for the County Farms Service.

It says its primary role should be to enable family-run farm businesses to continue to be the foundation of Cornish agriculture and to ensure new generations are given the chance to make their living from farming.

The next stage of the panel's work is to develop a realistic business plan for the next 10 years.

Panel chairman David Miller said "This decision by the executive is a major step forward for the County Farms Service in developing a focused business approach to the future.

"The county council is the only county-wide democratically elected body that can act as a community leader to ensure this opportunity is available."
