Businesses in Cornwall have been asked to consider the environment and future generations when planning expansions and development. Cornwall County Council has offered a prize to the firm which comes up with the best ideas.
Anthony Weight the council's sustainable development officer said being green could benefit everyone and save money.
He said: "You're cutting the cost at the bottom line.
"In reality there's a growing awareness that looking after the environment is actually good for your economics.
"For instance, if you're cutting down on your energy usage or cutting down on waste, you're minimising the costs to your business.
"There are all sorts of examples where businesses, even locally, have gone on waste minimisation programmes for example, and found that after a short course they can save tens of thousands of pounds a year."
