A Royal Navy helicopter from Cornwall helped rescue a man from a yacht more than 200 miles from the nearest land.

The six-hour rescue operation off the Isles of Scilly started after a mayday message from the yacht Silent Annie.

It was received by the government's fisheries research ship Cefas Endeavour which recovered the sick man using one of its rigid inflatable boats.

He was then airlifted by a Royal Navy Sea King helicopter from 771 Squadron at RNAS Culdrose in Cornwall.

The incident on Wednesday evening took place 207 miles south west of the Isles of Scilly.

A Nimrod aircraft from RAF Kinloss in Scotland was also sent as a communication link and to provide cover in case anything went wrong with the helicopter.

The sick man, who was suffering from chest pains, was landed at the Royal Cornwall Hospital Treliske.

His condition is described as comfortable and stable.
