Police to recruit motorcyclists
Biker and police bike
The plan is to recruit an extra 12 full-time police motorcyclists
More police motorcyclists are being recruited in Devon and Cornwall as part of efforts to increase biker safety and reduce accidents.

Motorcyclists make up just 1% of all traffic on the roads but account for 14% of all fatal collisions.

Last year 20 motorcyclists died in Devon and Cornwall and this year there have already been two fatalities.

It is hoped by increasing the number of police cyclists, officers will better understand the issues facing bikers.

The plan is to recruit an extra 12 full-time motorcyclists.

A pilot scheme is also expected to be held in Devon to offer bikers pulled over for traffic offences the chance to attend a day's course.

The course will encourage bikers to think about their actions and anticipate problems.

If successful the scheme could be widened to include Cornwall.
