Falmouth coastguards said there were rough seas
A 68-year-old man and his 39-year-old son have died after a family fishing expedition turned to tragedy off the Cornish coast.

The father went into the sea off Porthcothan beach after dropping his rod, followed by other members of the party who tried to assist him.

His body was recovered from the sea near Padstow on Saturday evening, and his son's on Sunday morning.

The younger man's wife was airlifted to hospital suffering from hypothermia.

The north Devon family, including the pensioner's wife, had been fishing from rocks on Saturday evening police said.

Falmouth coastguards said the incident happened when there were rough seas and a swell.

The older woman in the party did not go into the water, said the police.

Lifeboats from Newquay and Padstow, and the St Meryn coastguard team were involved in the operation.

Sea conditions at the time of the incident were "pretty atrocious," said the line manager of Padstow offshore lifeboat, Mike Walker.
